‘Attending Shen Yun Performance Is Something Precious,’ Korean Conductor Says
CHANGWON, South Korea—Shen Yun Performing Arts’s exquisite performance has received praise by many outstanding musicians around the world, including famous Korean conductor Kang Manho, who is currently the director of GyeongNam Philharmonic Orchestra, and was once the conductor of Turkish Izmir State Symphony Orchestra, and German Leipzig Kammeopilhamonik Orchestra, as well as the clarinet player of South Korean Jinju Municipal Symphony and Jinju Municipal Orchestra.
“I think attending Shen Yun performance is something precious, so I saw Shen Yun every year,” he said after seeing the performance presented at the 3.15 Arts Center in South Korea’s Changwon City by Shen Yun Performing Arts on the evening of Feb. 16, 2020.
Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, established in New York in 2006. It performs “classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dance, and story-based dance, with orchestral accompaniment and solo performers,” Shen Yun website explains. “For 5,000 years, divine culture flourished in the land of China. Through breathtaking music and dance, Shen Yun is reviving this glorious culture.”
“I was deeply touched [by Shen Yun performance] every time,” the conductor continued.
“Shen Yun is an artistic performance blending traditional culture, music, and dance,” he explained. “In the meantime, it interprets traditional culture, through music popular among modern people as well as legendary and contemporary stories, to let all the people gain further insight into it.”
Kang Manho spoke highly of Shen Yun’s promotion of the essence of authentic traditional Chinese culture by touring the world every year.
“[Shen Yun] demonstrates [authentic] Chinese culture on stages around the world,” he added. “Its level of artistic achievement is very high.”
“The performance also let modern people understand ancient people’s lifestyles,” he noted. “I think it really very wonderful.”
Kang Manho was especially impressed with the piece that depicts Falun Gong adherents’ great compassion and steadfastness regardless of the persecution they suffered in China.
“It deeply touched the bottom of my heart,” he said. “Some traditional values such as the peacefulness and equality of the entire humanity are portrayed in the performance.”
“In the performance, classic stories are portrayed in a more understandable way,” he explained. “I think Shen Yun has made tremendous efforts to help modern people to gain some insights into those classic stories.”
As a musician, Kang Manho very much enjoyed the accompaniment played by the unique orchestra.
“Shen Yun is unparalleled, as it perfectly combines Oriental musical instruments with a Western symphony,” he praised.
“I love Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra,” he said, referring to the ensemble comprised of Shen Yun’s musicians who tour separately each year. “I hope Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra can perform in South Korea independently.”
“I am so happy because I found the future [hope] after seeing the performance,” he said.
Touched by Shen Yun’s performance, the conductor was pleased to urge people around him to see Shen Yun’s performance.
“I often told my friends and relatives that Shen Yun is magnificent,” he said. “I strongly recommended them to attend [Shen Yun performance].”
