D.F. / arr. JUNYI TAN
The initial, melancholy erhu solo foreshadows the story about to unfold. A soft G major melody then enters, and develops into a lush, sweeping section meant to evoke the peaceful joy felt by people practicing Falun Dafa meditation exercises. In China currently, however, practicing Falun Dafa is an act that can put one in great danger. Suddenly, the atmosphere changes in a section that depicts today’s persecution of these gentle people by the Chinese state. Cymbal crashes signify the beating of the innocent, while strings’ racing notes are the footsteps of police. Yet, when the music returns to G major, the persecuted extend love and compassion toward their oppressors, even at risk of their own lives—a danger heard once again through the cymbals. Mutual forgiveness and understanding are reached. A majestic finale by the whole orchestra represents a host of divinities descending to offer protection, and goodness ultimately triumphs.
