JING XIANThis piece depicts a well-loved episode from the classic novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is the year 208, and the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang gazes across the Yangtze River to see enemy forces ten times his own. Knowing he must quickly produce 100,000 arrows, the strategist-hero devises a plan. Battle horns sound, and strong rhythms synchronize the troops as they row into enemy waters under cover of night and thick fog. Thunderous drums alert the enemy of the boats’ arrival, and soon their arrows soar to hit the targets, which are, unbeknownst to them, merely straw men. To this day, historical figure Zhuge Liang is admired for his military brilliance, which bordered on supernatural.
