Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major

Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major

By the end of the 18th century, Joseph Haydn had established himself as one of the greatest composers of his time. He returned to Vienna after a hugely successful tour in London, settling down to focus primarily on sacred vocal music. However, when the newly invented keyed trumpet appeared in 1796, Haydn lent his musical genius one more time to an instrumental concerto, marking this key moment in the trumpet's history.

Before 1796, trumpets could only play the natural notes of the overtone series (natural trumpets). This meant they had a very limited note range and usually played fanfare-like figures or bugle calls. Melodies and scales were only possible in the extreme high register(like the famous trumpet part in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.2). But with the advent of the keyed trumpet, it was now possible to play chromatically throughout all ranges of the instrument. This was a revelation for the musical world, and Haydn took the opportunity to fully explore the new capabilities of this wonderful invention.

The first movement is a perfect showcase of the trumpet's newfound ability to play melodically in the lower register. Light and playful, the solo trumpet skips and sings up and down the scales, effortlessly replying to any melody that the orchestra throws his way. The movement culminates in a brilliant technical display of a cadenza that would've astounded audiences of the 1800s. The second movement is written in the style of a Sicilienne dance, poised and elegant. One can almost see the dance steps in the gentle, swinging rhythmic accompaniment as the solo trumpet and strings glide gracefully across the dance floor on the wings of a beautiful, sweet melody. The third movement is a festive, jubilant contrast with the calm refinement of the second movement. Scampering 16th note runs and lively eighth notes complete with fanfare figures from the brass and timpani evoke feelings of a happy celebration, while the solo trumpet continues to delight with cheerful melodies and flashes of technical prowess. The concerto finishes with an exhilarating rush towards a fanfare-like finale, perhaps a nod to the origins of the keyed trumpet.
