The seventh-century emperor was instrumental in establishing the mighty Tang Dynasty (618–907) and often fought in the vanguard alongside his soldiers. The piece opens with the horn calling his men to the training ground. Martial rhythms from the strings symbolize the soldiers’ discipline and gallantry. In the middle section, a passionate pipa solo represents the mighty emperor training a group of elite warriors. With heightened vigor, brass and percussion propel the orchestra to a dramatic finish.
