Sleeves of Grace
Shen Yun Compositions
D.F. / arr. JUNYI TANA lovely interplay of pipa (Chinese lute) and woodwinds sets the mood perfectly for a piece that maintains this same character throughout. Even when the tempo rises, the feeling remains graceful, elegant, and gentle—like the long, silken “water sleeves” from which the piece takes its name. Dancing with these long, flowing sleeves is a form of classical Chinese dance recorded as early as the Zhou Dynasty (1045–256 B.C.E). The style of this piece comes from the Jiang Nan region, south of the Yangtze River. Like many of Shen Yun’s pieces, it is based on the pentatonic (five-tone) scale common to Chinese music.
