Ballet is known for its turn out, pointe work, and straight lines, while classical Chinese dance is characterized by circular and spiraling movements. Ballet dancers travel on the balls of their feet, radiating an air of nobility and elegance. Classical Chinese dancers, on the other hand, travel through rolling from the heels of the feet to the toes while keeping the upper body perfectly level, known as the yuanchang step in Chinese. This allows them to appear as if floating on clouds. Ballet is admired for its precision of movement and exquisite pauses. Meanwhile, classical Chinese dance, through its connection of breath and movement, invites viewers to savor the beauty of restraint and inner depth. How can we distinguish and appreciate ballet and classical Chinese dance, the two most comprehensive dance systems in the world?
