In the seventh century, at the height of the Tang Dynasty, the emperor asked a Buddhist monk to embark on a perilous journey in search of treasured scriptures. It took the monk 16 years to travel on foot to what is today known as India, and return to China with the sacred texts.

The story of Tang Monk’s pilgrimage is covered with an extra dose of magic in the classic novel Journey to the West. Accompanied by his disciples—Monkey King, Pigsy, and Sand Monk—he endures 81 trials and tribulations before eventually returning to China’s capital. This dance captures that moment of triumph, as Emperor Tang Taizong welcomes the entourage back to the imperial palace.
