Early Shen Yun Pieces: The Monkey King Thwarts the Evil Toad (2014 Production)

The classic novel Journey to the West tells of a Tang Dynasty monk and his disciples (the Monkey King, Sand Monk, and Pigsy) on a quest for Buddhist scriptures. When, en route, a toad monster pounces on them, the Monkey King beats it with his magic staff, injuring the monster's leg. Stupidly undaunted, the toad hops to the moon, where the goddess Chang-e dances with her celestial fairies. Her companion, the Jade Rabbit, is busy making healing elixir with a mortar and pestle. The opportunistic toad assumes the rabbit's form, steals the elixir, and sneaks off with the pestle.

Back on Earth, the royal family of a kingdom to the West welcomes the travelers to the capital. But as its beautiful princess tries to wed the monk, the Monkey King soon discovers that she is not the real princess but instead the toad in disguise. Monkey goes after the monster, Sand Monk rescues the real princess, Chang'e and her rabbit reclaim their stolen pestle, Pigsy forgets his manners, and all wish the journeymen a safe trip.
