Early Shen Yun Pieces: Poets of the Orchid Pavilion (2016 Production)

In the year 353, a group of scholars played a unique drinking game. By the banks of a stream, they sent wine cups floating down its currents. Whenever a cup stopped in front of someone, he had to empty it and compose a poem. Through the game, they created an anthology of 37 poems. In this piece, dancers use fans to mimic the scholars’ brushes as they write with elegant strokes. Behind them appear the words to the anthology’s preface, now considered one of the greatest works of Chinese calligraphy.
