Emperor Tang Xuanzong (685–762 C.E.) was known for his love of the arts. This legend tells of how he once found celestial inspiration for one of his famous musical compositions.
The story takes place in the Tang Dynasty capital of Chang’an. In the imperial courtyard, the emperor is drinking and admiring the full moon. After dismissing his servants he lays down to sleep. It is then that he is visited by the moon goddess and her attendants. They lead him on a magical journey in which he sees them dance to music so beautiful that he wishes to remember it forever.
Upon returning to Earth, the emperor writes one of the Tang dynasty’s best-known pieces, “Song of Rainbow Skirt and Feathered Dress.”
