The Pipa – A Closer Look

The Chinese pipa, a four-stringed lute, is known as “the King” of Chinese instruments. With its wide range of playing techniques and ability to blend into various genres, the pipa can create a myriad of musical auras¬—from enchanting melodies to thrilling battle narratives.

At its peak of popularity during the Tang Dynasty, this regal instrument could often be found gracing royal court ensembles. Today it is a mainstay in the Shen Yun orchestra.

Now, watch as pipa player Miao-Tzu Chiu gives us the royal tour.
