Classical Chinese dance has a vast set of technical moves, many of which are shared with other art forms within China’s larger cultural sphere. This series takes a look at these moves to help you better appreciate what you see on stage.

In the Chinese language, the words for “martial arts” and “dance” have the same pronunciation—wu. Though one is used in a martial or military sense and the other in a cultural or artistic sense, many of their movements share common origins.

This can be seen in the diverse technical moves of both art forms—some of which we will be exploring in this episode. While martial arts demand these moves to be completed with speed and explosiveness, classical Chinese dance focuses on elongation and expressiveness.
