Antonín DvořákA description of Carnival attributed to Dvořák says, “The lonely, contemplative wanderer reaches the city at nightfall, where a carnival is in full swing. On every side is heard the clangor of instruments, mingled with shouts of joy.” This was originally to be the middle of a triptych that Dvořák subsequently published as three overtures—In Nature’s Realm, Carnival, and Othello. Dvořák conducted its U.S. premiere in October 1892 at Carnegie Hall. In the slow section where the English horn and the flute depict “a pair of straying lovers,” there appears the pentatonic “nature” theme common to the three overtures.
