Angelia On Dance, Ep. 6 - Circular Steps (Yuan-Chang)

In this episode, Angelia joins us from Nantes, France, to introduce a unique aspect of classical Chinese dance.

Audiences often comment on how Shen Yun performers seem to “float on air.” This is due to a special step in classical Chinese dance called the “_yuan-chang_”—loosely translated as “circular steps.”

Also used in Peking opera, _yuan-chang_ are characterized by putting one’s heels to the ground first, then transferring weight to the toes. Done quickly, they create a gliding effect. Female dancers generally take tiny steps, while men take large strides.

Next time you watch a Shen Yun performance, see if you can spot the performers using _yuan-chang_.
