Early Shen Yun Pieces: Monkey Battles Warlock (2018 Production)

This episode from the classic novel *Journey to the West* begins in the remote kingdom of Wuji. It is plagued by drought and the king is in despair. Suddenly, a warlock comes down from the sky and conjures a rainstorm. The people rejoice, but are oblivious to his sinister plan—he secretly shoves the king into a well and takes on the king’s image.

This is when the story’s heroes appear: the magical Monkey King, distracted Pigsy, devoted ogre Sandy, and their master, a Buddhist monk. They are on a quest for sacred scriptures and, passing through this kingdom, decide to take a rest. As they settle for the night, the spirit of the king appears, begging for help. Fortunately, Monkey has connections in high places—he flies up to the heavens and coaxes a Taoist sage to give him a magic pill. Monkey then confronts the impostor king (that is, the warlock) in a final battle. Just when it seems like all is said and done, it turns out the warlock had a secret identity. He was, in fact, the pet lion of a bodhisattva goddess.
