In Chinese, yi jing is the term for the atmosphere or artistic conception being conveyed through a work of art. Here, the imagery is of elegant ladies dancing with “water sleeves,” long flowing silks that have been used by Chinese dancers for millennia. The sleeves billow and flutter in a charming dance. Erhu, pipa, and woodwinds take turns embellishing simple melodies, followed by restatements in the orchestra. Then, violins lean in to a colorful mosaic of texture and sound, creating an yi jing of subtle beauty.
